Theme:
Joshua reveals a lot about God. He gave them easy victories. It was simple instructions. What does God ask of us.
Just a few things for perspective:
1. Mediate in the word
2. Forsake not the assembly of ourselves
3. Treat others how you want to be treated
4. Have no others gods before God
5. treat bad people good because from his perspective he treats bad people all the time and those bad people is us
6. treat people good because we are always asking for Good things to follow and happen to us. How evil is it to seek bad on another persons life.
Is serving God really hard?
I think sometimes people just like being evil....
1. lying
2. killing
3. mistreating others
God ask the Israelite's to march around the wall and shout. It was simple. But sometimes our flesh wants to do evil because it feels good to the soul; but God is not asking for hard things. He ask us to treat our brothers right. He asks us to bless them and not curse them. He says to pray for our enemies because he KNOWS the devil is using that person. He or she does not have a clue that a very foul spirit is in them. He says to forgive. I know it may seem hard but its really simple. The thing that is hard is doing something our evil nature don't want to do. When you find that you cannot do it then it means that God is good and we are evil. Just be honest with yourself. But if you desire to be good then ask for Help. God has a helper to help our evil selves.
We are Evil and there is none good but God. When you do good don't congratulate yourself because we do good because he tells us what is good and what is bad.
Naturally men and women live among a devil who he tricks us into hurting each other and God sets in the middle trying to create peace among men. One man thinks hes better than his poor brother; another man kills because he thinks he is justified in how he feels. In summary when we mistreat others we can know.... We are evil! Some people enjoy it! We do good because God has convinced us to do it. This is the whole salvation of man and woman. It is God convincing us that we are very wicked.
GOD LOOKS UPON THE HEART.
NO MAN HAS A DESTINY TO GO TO HELL BUT MAN AND WOMEN HAVE HEARTS THAT CAN BE GOOD OR BAD.
God desires those who have pure hearts and ability to love others through there short comings and failures. He wants a men and women after his own heart.
How do I know that; I know God has given us the power of choices. What is difference between Saul and David? Is David just highly favored and destined to reign while Saul was destined to fall. I would say it was a matter of Choices. David was God's choice because God knew his heart. He was man after God's heart. Sadly God knew that Saul did not share the same qualities God needed in a King. God loves his people and he desires a King or leader that will listen to him in order to protect his sheep. David loved animals how much more could he love people. Why would God want a leader who does not listen to him. The sheep will suffer. I don't think it was personal. But I believe God is concrete and straightforward. A bad King or leader has to go. I really enjoy reading the bible. It is a light unto my feet directing my feet. It has an effect on my life. Often times it brings conviction. It is not condemning. Condemning is to say, Aha you have done wrong, it is over. Condemned. God will never throw you away as if it is impossible to win you. It may take words, a person, or even circumstances but in the end we say, Aha God you were right. And conviction is a convincing. It is God saying this thing or that thing leads to this. It will lead to this or that. It is not saying your relationship with God is over but it is saying it is not pleasing to God. As we experience conviction we are face with choices. God convince others in the bibles and he convinces me. I pray that his convincing changes my choices.
Chapter 6
Now the gates of Jericho were securely barred because of the Israelites. No one went out and no one came in. Then the Lord said to Joshua, See I have delivered Jericho into your hands, along with its King and its fighting men. March around the city once with all the armed men. Do this for six days. Have seven priests carry trumpets of rams hones in front of the ark. On the seventh day, march around the city seven times, with the priests blowing the trumpets when you hear them sound a long blast on the trumpets, have the whole army give a loud shout; then the wall of the city will collapse and the army will go up, everyone straight in.
So Joshua son of Nun called the priest and said to them, take up the ark of the covenant of the Lord and have seven priests carry trumpets in front of it. And he ordered the army, Advance! March around the city, with an armed guard going ahead of the ark of the Lord.
When Joshua had spoken to the people, the seven priests carrying the seven trumpets before the Lord went forward, blowing their trumpets, and the ark of the Lord's covenant followed them. The armed guard marched ahead of the priests who blew the trumpets, and the rear guard followed the ark. All this time the trumpets were sounding. But Joshua had commanded the Army, Do not give a war cry, do not raise your voices, do not say a word until the day I tell you to shout, Then shout! So he had the ark of the Lord carried around the city, circling it once. Then the army returned to the camp and spent the night there.
Joshua got up early the next morning and he priests took up the ark of the Lord. The seven priests carrying the seven trumpets went forward, marching before the ark of the Lord and blowing the trumpets. The armed men went ahead of them and the rear guard followed the ark of the Lord, while the trumpets kept sounding. So on the second day they marched around the city once and returned to the camp. they did this for six days. On the seventh day they got up at daybreak and marched arond the city seven times in the same manner, except that on the day they circled the city seven times. the seventh time around, when teh priests sounded the trumpet blast, Joshua commanded the army, shout! FOr the Lord has given you the city! The city and all that is in it are to be devoted to the Lord. Only Rahab the prositute and all who are with her in her house shall be spared, because she hid the spies we sent. But keep away from the devoted things so that you will not bring about your own destruction by taking any of them. Otherwise you will make the camp of Israel liable to destruction and bring trouble on it. All the silver and gold and articles of bronze and Iron are sacred to the Lord and must go into his treasury.
When the trumpets sounded, the army shouted, and at the sound of the trumpet, the army shouted, and at the sound of the trumpet, when the men gave a loud shout the wall collapsed.
I cant't help but smile each time I read this. We see from the perspective of Israel they are just walking and shouting on the seventh round. But think from the perspective of Jericho they must have been thinking the worse. I can see them trembling like....OMG they tearing stuff everything down. They probably was thinking the shouting was destruction coming. They already had great fear. Gods man of war is there. God knows everything, we don't. He knew what to do to drive them out. It was pretty simple. I would think it would take a lot of hard work to win Jericho but in reality it just takes faith in God. It takes following his leading. It takes a great leader who listens to God. Of course God can do damage but he didn't need to. He drowned Pharaohs army because they kept coming back for more. If they had just obeyed things would have been different. But Jericho they heard about it and they were already scared.
So everyone charged straight in, and they took the city. They devoted the city to the Lord and destroyed with the sword every living thing in it---men and women, young and old, cattle, sheep, and donkeys.
Joshua said to the men who had spied out the land, Go into the prostitutes house and bring her out and all who belong to her, So the young men who had the spying went in and brought out Rahab, her father and mother, her brothers and sisters and all who belonged to her. They brought out her entire family and put them in a place outside the camp of Israel. Then they burned the whole city and everything in it, but they put the silver and gold and the articles of bronze and iron into the treasury of the Lords house. But Joshua spared Rahab the prostitute? with her family and all who belonged to her, because she hid the men Joshua had sent as spies to Jericho---and she lives among the Israelites to this day.
At that time Joshua pronounced this solemn oath; "Cursed before the Lord is the one who undertakes to rebuild this city, Jericho"
"At the cost of his firstborn son he will lay its foundations; at the cost of his youngest son he will set up its gates"
When God takes it down. Leave it down. This declaration is scary. God did not want Jericho rebuilt. It will cost the person their kids lives if they try to rebuild that city. I really do not know the history of Jericho but from the scriptures I believe it was a wicked city. The land is good but the city was not.
So the Lord was with Joshua, and his fame spread throughout the land.
