The woman marveled and glanced at the happy
baby boy; and the laundry basket resting on the sofa. The baby and the basket had to make it down the road to the washing bins. Each village had two days to wash and dry. Today was her village last day. Normally Aunt Julie watched over the baby and the house but today Aunt Julie was having some eye trouble. She called this morning to remind the young couple that she would not be able to look after the baby this week. As she pondered what to do a great idea came to mind. She held the baby close to her. She removed her handmade silk scarf and place the baby on her back and begin to swaddle the baby. She wrapped one layer around her waist and another around her neck until the baby boy was snugly resting on her back. She then grabbed both ends and tied a tight knot. The beautiful baby boy giggled as he held on to his mothers back. It wasn't long before she felt him resting and sleeping on her back. When she felt him completely relax she squatted down to lift up the basket. The pressure of the baby on her back was heavy but the basket in the front tested her muscles in a way she could not handle. As she begin to travel down the road she felt relief as she lifted the basket to her shoulder and made it to the top of her head. The basket fit smugly. She used one hand to balance it and another to rest. She immediately found balance and relief. She heard the quiet snores of the baby and she realized that she was 8 minutes from where she going. Today she would even stop and pick a little corn as well as wash the clothes. To her surprise all the woman in her village joined her once they saw her smoothly carrying the baby and the basket. "What a woman," she heard someone cry out from the back. Over the next few weeks all the women wrapped their hair and walked down the road with fruit, food, and clothing baskets on their heads. A woman's arms are weaker than a mans but her head is just as strong. She found a way to balance her weight. She was graceful as she walked the dirt path.
She wondered what others thought of her but she really didn't care. She was carrying her load. She wanted to be a woman with creative powers. She is creative. Give her a problem and she will create a solution. She will balance her kids, home, and chores. Over the years she had changed for the betterment. Now technology allows her to connect to family and friends while she works and educates herself. She has mastered how to exercise and push the baby. Just like in past times she is still creative. Sometimes its making dinner and washing the clothes. Sometimes is getting the kids ready for church and fixing breakfast. She is able to time the hair curlers and grits. She is creative in her home. She is able to balance the baby, the food, and the chores. Celebrating the unique abilities of women everywhere.
