Psalms 77

For the director of music.
For Jeduthun of Asaph. A Psalm

I cried out to God for help;
I cried out to God to hear me.
When I was in distress, I sought the Lord;

at night I stretched out untiring hands,
and I would not be comforted.
I remembered you, God, and I groaned;
I thought on it,  and my spirit grew faint.
You kept my eyes from closing;
I was too troubled to speak.
I thought about the former days,

the years of long ago;
I remembered my songs in the night.
My heart meditated and my spirit asked:

Will the Lord reject forever?
Will he never show his favor again?
Has his unfailing love vanished forever?
Has his promise failed for all time?
Has God forgotten to be merciful?
Has he in anger withheld his compassion?
Then I thought, 'To this I will appeal;
the years when the Most High stretched out his right hand.
I will remember the deed of the Lord;

yes, I will remember your miracles of long ago.
I will consider all your works
and thought on all your mighty deeds.
Your ways, God, are holy.
What god is as great as our God?
You are the God who performs miracles;
you display your power among the peoples.
With your mighty arm you redeemed your people,
the descendants of Jacob and Joseph.
The waters saw you, God,
the waters saw you and writhed;
the very depths were convulsed.
The clouds poured down water,

the heavens resounded with thunder,
you arrows flashed back and forth.
Your thunder was heard in the whirl,
your lightening lit up the world;
the earth trembled and quaked.
your path led through the sea,

your way through the mighty waters,
though your footprints were not seen.
You led your people like a flock
by the hand of Moses and Aaron.

John 5
The Authority of the Son

So, because Jesus was doing these things on the Sabbath, the Jewish leaders began to persecute him. In his defense Jesus said to them, "My Father is always at his work to this very day, and I too am working. For this reason they tried all the more to kill him; not only was he breaking the Sabbath, but he was even calling God his own Father, making himself equal with God.

Jesus gave them this answer; "Very truly I tell you, the Son can do nothing by himself, he can do only what he sees his Father doing, because whatever the Father does the Son also does. For the Father loves the son and shows him all he does. Yes, and he will him even greater works than these, so that you be amazed. For just as the Father raises the dead and gives them life, even so the Son gives life to whom he is pleased to give it. Moreover, the Father judges no one, but he has entrusted all judgement to the Son, that all may honor the Son just as they honor the Father. Whoever does not honor the Son does not honor the Father, who sent him.

Very truly I tell you, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life and will not be judged but has crossed over from death to life. Very truly I tell you, a time is coming and has now come when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God and those who hear will live. For as the Father has life in himself, so he has granted the Son also have life in himself. And he has given him authority to judge because he is the Son of Man.

Do not be amazed at this, for a time is coming when all who are in their graves will hear his voice and come out--those who have done what is good will rise to live, and those who have done what is evil will rise to be condemned. By myself I can do nothing, I judge only as I hear, and my judgement is just, for I seek not to please myself but him who sent me.

Testimonies About Jesus

If I testify about myself, my testimony is not true. There is another who testifies in my favor, and I know that his testimony about me is true. You have sent to John and he has testified to the truth. Not that I accept human testimony; but I mention it that you may be saved. John was a lamp that burned and gave light, and you choose for a time to enjoy his light.

I have testimony weightier than that of John. For the works that the Father has given me to finish--the very works that I am doing--testify that the Father has sent me. And the Father who sent me has himself testified concerning me. You have never heard his voice or seen his form, nor does his word dwell in you, for you do not believe the one he sent. You study the scriptures diligently because you think that in them you have eternal life. These are the very scriptures that testify about me, yet you refuse to come to me to have life.

I do not accept glory from human beings, but I know you. I know that you do not have the love of God in  your hearts. I have come in my Father's name, and you do not accept me; but if someone else comes in his own name, you will accept him. How can you believe since you accept glory from one another but do not seek the glory that comes from the only God?

But do not think I will accuse you before the Father. Your accuser is Moses, on whom your hopes are set. If you believe Moses, you would believe me, for he wrote about me. But since you do not believe what he wrote, how are you going to believe what I say?

NIV Commentary

  1. The Son's activities such as raising the dead and judging or determining what is right and what is wrong ( was the purpose and will of God (the son only does what he sees the father do)
  2. The Father raises the dead, this was a firm belief among the Jews (not the Sadducees.) The Jews believed that God did not give this privilege to anyone.
  3. God entrusted all judgement to the Son. The Jews believe that God was the judge of the world. Jesus teaching is called by the Jews as heretical.
  4. In the Old testament life belong to God and Jesus has this life in him.
  5. Jesus stresses his dependence on God (his relationship with the Father).
  6. Jesus claim; (I do not accept human testimony) NIV states it probably means he does not rely on human testimony which is always fallible and fickle.
  7. The Father testifies about Jesus (A reference to God's voice in the scripture)
  8.  the scriptures testify of Jesus Christ.

The Scriptures point to Christ
  • King David speaks of him
  • The Psalms has lots of references to Christ long before he arrived.
  • Moses speaks of him. (the temple, his rule, the promise land)
  • The building of the temple.
