Happy Sunday
May the blessing of the Lord be upon you.
Psalms 129
July 19, 2020
'They have greatly oppressed me from my youth,
let Israel say;
they have greatly oppressed me from my youth,
but they have not gained the victory
over me.
Plowmen have plowed my back
and made their furrows long.
But the Lord is righteous;
he has cut me free from the cords
of the wicked.
May all who hate Zion
be turned back in shame.
May they be like grass on the roof.
which withers before it can grow;
a reaper cannot fill his hands with it,
nor one who gathers fill his arms.
May those who pass by not say to them,
"The blessing of the Lord be on you;
we bless you in the name of the Lord."
Acts 2 Continued
Verses 29-47
Fellow Israelite's, I can tell you confidently that the Patriarch David died and was buried, and his tomb is here to this day. But he was a prophet and knew that God had promised him an oath that he would place one of his descendants on his throne.
(Peter calling David a prophet is a very fitting title because the psalms is filled with prophetic passages. David spent quality time with God. There are people who claim to have psychic powers and they can tell you things because evil spirits give them knowledge. But prophecy deals with things to come; and it can be referenced with the scriptures.)
Seeing what was to come, he spoke of the resurrection of the Messiah, that he was not abandoned to the realm of the dead, nor did his body see decay. God has raised this Jesus to life, and we are all witnesses of it. Exalted to the right hand of God, he has received from the Father the promised Holy Spirit and has poured out what you now see and hear. For David did not ascend to the heaven yet he said,
"The Lord said to my Lord:
Sit at my right hand
until I make your enemies
a footstool for your feet.
Therefore let all Israel be assured of this: God made this Jesus whom you crucified, both Lord and Messiah.
When the people heard this, they were cut to the heart and said to Peter and the other apostles, "Brothers, what shall we do?
Peter replied, Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of the Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. The promise is for you and your children and for all who are far off--for all whom the Lord our God will call. With many other words he warned them; and he pleaded with them, Save yourself from this corrupt generation. Those who accepted his message were baptized, and about three thousand were added to their number that day.
Amazing!
The Fellowship of the Believers
They devoted themselves to the apostles teaching and to the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer. Everyone was filled with awe at the many wonders and signs performed by the apostles. All the believers were together and had everything in common. They sold property and possessions to give to anyone who had need.Everyday they continued to meet together in the temple courts. They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts, praising God and enjoying the favor of all people. And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved.
The Acts of the Believers
- They devoted themselves to the teachings of the apostles
- they devoted themselves to the fellowship
- they were committed to breaking bread and praying together
- Everyday they met in the temple courts
- they ate together in their homes
- they had sincere hearts
- they praise God
- they had favor among all people (no problems)
The Apostles Acts
They performed signs and wonders among the people. Jesus did them too, feeding the five thousand, water to wine, etc...
- They put Jesus first
- The people asked them how to be saved; and it is through repentance.
- He tells them that God will give them the gift of the Holy Spirit once they repent and be baptized.
- It also reads like the apostles treated themselves as fellow brothers and sisters.
Baptizing (to immerse) ( to bathe)
1250–1300; Middle English, Latin baptizāre, Greek baptízein (bápt(ein) + -izein -ize)
- Some believe
- Some don't.
- To my understanding some believe baptism does not change the person. They say wet person or dry person its the same the person.
- I do believe it is necessary to a persons salvation because It is the idea of going down and coming up. It could be representational of a new birth. The gift of the Holy Spirit comes afterwards. It could be representational of a spiritual bath.
- I do believe it is necessary to because it says being baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of sins; secondly Jesus was baptized and Peter says, they will get the gift of the Holy Spirit after this happens. In the gospels the dove ascending upon Jesus after baptism.
Have a great day!
