 Isaiah 16

Continued prophecy against Moab

The last paragraph: "This is the word the Lord has already spoken concerning Moab. But now the Lord says: within three years, as a servant bound by contract would count them, Moab's splendor and all her many people will be despised, and her survivors will be few and feeble.

Isaiah 17

A Prophecy Against Damascus

A prophecy against Damascus:

See, Damascus will no longer be a city but will become a heap of ruins, The cities of Aroer will be deserted and left to flocks, which will lie down, with no one to make them afraid. The fortified city will disappear from Ephraim.

Where was Damascus located?

Damascus was one of the most important cities of Syria. It is situated 130 miles northeast of Jerusalemin a plain of vast size and of extreme fertility, which lies east of the great chain of Anti-Libanus, on the edge of the desert.

Isaiah 25

Praise to the Lord

Lord, you are my God;

I will exalt you and praise your name,

for in perfect faithfulness

you have done wonderful things,

things planned long ago.

You have made the city a heap of rubble;

the fortified town a ruin,

the foreigners stronghold a city no more;

it will never be rebuilt.

Therefore strong peoples will honor you;

cities of ruthless nations will revere you.

You have been a refuge for the poor,

a refuge for the needy in their distress, a shelter from the storm

and a shade from the heat.

Things are bad for a lot of cities and places but in the midst of all the prophecies the people praise God because he helped the poor. They are not praising him because bad things is happening or they feel bullied to praise him out of fear but he was a shelter to the needy. For once the poor is being taken care of; its sad that so many others have to experience bad things in order for the poor to receive help. All of this caused good to take place and at the end of it all God is right.

For the breath of the ruthless is like a storm diving against a wall and like the heat of the desert. You silence the uproar of foreigners; as heat is reduced by the shadow of a cloud, so the song of the ruthless is stilled.

On this mountain the Lord Almighty will prepare a feast of rich food for all peoples, a banquet of aged wine--the best of meats and the finest of wines.

On this mountain he will destroy the shroud that enfolds all peoples, the sheet that covers all nations; he will swallow up death forever. The Sovereign Lord will wipe away the tears from all faces; he will remove the people's disgrace from all the earth.

The Lord has spoken.

In that day they will say,

Surely this is our God we trusted in him, and he saved us. This is the Lord, we trusted in him; let us rejoice and be glad in his salvation.

The hand of the Lord will rest on this mountain; but Moab will be trampled in their land as straw is trampled down in the manure. They will stretch out their lands in it, as swimmers stretch out their hands to swim.

God will bring down their pride despite the cleverness of their hands. He will bring down your high fortified walls and lay them low; he will bring them down to the ground, to the very dust.

  • How one treats the poor really matters to God.
  • Keep it close to your heart and know that the poor cry out to God day and night.
  • He desires to help them but wicked people in high places sometimes block people on the lower levels.
  • In this passage the people praise God because he was a shelter for the poor.

Sayings of the wise

Saying 18

My son, give me your heart and let your eyes delight in my ways,

for an adulterous woman is a deep pit, and a wayward wife is a narrow well.

Like a bandit she lies in wait and multiplies the unfaithful among men.
