 Good Morning!

The Book Of Jeremiah

The bible is for edification and correction. It builds up and tears down what is not good. It displays the weaknesses of mankind but I believe the goal and purpose is for our good.

It was the false the prophets who proclaimed peace to a rebellious nation. But it was not to be a time of peace.

God called Israel rebellious and God compelled Jeremiah to denounce sin and judgement.

Something to note:

1. Jeremiah is the longest book in the bible

2. Poetic repetition will be in the language

I love to pick a part the language because I like to pick up the voice of the writer and as you study the text you can separate God and man. At times when you read Isaiah you forget about Isaiah and we begin reading as if God is speaking directly to you.

3.  The use of visual aids (He threw the pot like a pebble)

Something to think on: What happens when you tell a person in the wrong that everything will be okay! What happens if you tell a good person things will go wrong with you.

By nature God is honest and upright. I think the fact that he tells us truth is pure love because every road has a destination. It is like a man that steals or kills one day his or her actions will catch up to them. I think it is out of a spirit of love that God lets you know there will not be any peace but it will be a time when peace will be far from them.

Jeremiah 1

The words of Jeremiah son of Hilkiah, one of the priests at Anathoth in the territory of Benjamin. The word of Lord came to him in the thirteenth year of the reign of Josiah son of Anon king of Judah, and through the reign of Jehoiakim son of Josiah king of Judah, down to the fifth month of the eleventh year of Zedekiah son of Josiah king of Judah, when the people of Jerusalem went into exile.

Exile was a state or a period of forced absence from one's country or home.

It was tough times for Israel

In a foreign land:

1. People will treat their own people better than you

2. they gave them the worst of the worst in the land.

3. they made them bow to them

4. Basically they were under a group of wicked Babylonians who did not believe or serve their God.

5. If we think serving God is hard can you image having to be surrounded by wicked people 24 hours a day. Their eyes on their every move. Their joy was to make them miserable. They mock and jeered.

6.They were pushed out of their home land or into a state surrounded by a foreign people.

 The Call of Jeremiah

The word of the Lord came to me, saying,

Before I formed you in the womb

I knew you,

before you were born I set you apart;

I appointed you as a prophet to the nations.

Alas, Sovereign Lord, I said, "I do not know how to speak;

I am too young. But the Lord said to me, "Do not say, I am too

young. You must go to everyone I send you to and

say whatever I command you. Do not be afraid of them, for I am

with you and will rescue you, declares the Lord.

Then the Lord reached out his hand and touched my mouth and

and said to me, "I have put my words in your mouth. See, today

I appoint you over nations and kingdoms to uproot and tear

down, to destroy and overthrow, to build and to plant.

The purpose of the word in his mouth

  • to build
  • to plant
  • to tear down
  • to uproot
  • He appointed him over  nations and kingdoms
  •  this is how much God trusted Jeremiah
  • How awesome is that!
  • Similarities with Isaiah, Isaiah said the angel touched his mouth and Jeremiah says the Lord touched his mouth
  • Both mouths were touched by God
  • A mouth free from hate but one filled with the word of God (awesome)

The word of the Lord came to me:

What do you see, Jeremiah?

"I see the branch of an almond tree, I replied.

The Lord said to me, "You have seen correctly, for I am watching

to see that my word is fulfilled.

The word of of the Lord came to me again: "What do you see?

"I see a pot that is boiling, I answered.

"It is tilting toward us from the north.

The Lord said to me, "From the North disaster will be poured out on all who live in the land. I am about to summon all the peoples of the northern Kingdoms, declares the Lord.

When God goes to Isaiah he says whom shall I send? Isaiah says send me Lord. God comes to Jeremiah in his youth and says before you born I knew you. I formed you and I called you to be a prophet unto the Nations. Similar to idea that God is going to use and call a person at a specific time on the earth. Just like the birth of John the Baptist. Something inside of Jeremiah knows where he came from. Secondly these were good men but God still had to touch their mouth. He puts his word in the mouth of Jeremiah. The word is God and God is the word so we can say he put himself in them. The body is Jeremiah but he has God inside of him because he has the WORD.

Jeremiah says the word came to me.

He knew God was speaking to him and God showed him great things.

God tells Jeremiah he watches over his word to perform it.

"Their kings will come and set up their thrones

in the entrance of the gates of Jerusalem;

they will come against all her surrounding walls

and against all the towns if Judah.

I will pronounce my judgements on my people

because of their wickedness in forsaking me,

in burning incense to other gods and in worshiping

what their hands have made.

Get yourself ready!

Stand up and say to them whatever I command you.

Do not be terrified by them, or I will terrify you

before them. Today I have made you a fortified city, an iron

pillar and a bronze  wall to stand against the whole land----

against the kings of Judah.

Who is he going to stand against? The Kings of Judah,

its officials, its priests, and the people of the land. They will fight against you but I will not overcome you, for I am with you and I will rescue you, declares the Lord.

Jeremiah (the prophet of doom)

               (the weeping prophet)

Proverbs 29

He, that being often reproved hardeneth his neck, shall suddenly be destroyed, and that without remedy.

When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice: but when the wicked beareth rule, the people mourn.

Whoso loveth wisdom rejoiceth his father: but he that keepeth company with harlots spendeth his substance.

The king by judgment establisheth the land: but he that receiveth gifts overthroweth it.

A man that flattereth his neighbour spreadeth a net for his feet.

In the transgression of an evil man there is a snare: but the righteous doth sing and rejoice.

The righteous considereth the cause of the poor: but the wicked regardeth not to know it.

Scornful men bring a city into a snare: but wise men turn away wrath.

If a wise man contendeth with a foolish man, whether he rage or laugh, there is no rest.

The bloodthirsty hate the upright: but the just seek his soul.

A fool uttereth all his mind: but a wise man keepeth it in till afterwards.

If a ruler hearken to lies, all his servants are wicked.

The poor and the deceitful man meet together: the Lord lighteneth both their eyes.

The king that faithfully judgeth the poor, his throne shall be established for ever.

The rod and reproof give wisdom: but a child left to himself bringeth his mother to shame.

When the wicked are multiplied, transgression increaseth: but the righteous shall see their fall.

Correct thy son, and he shall give thee rest; yea, he shall give delight unto thy soul.

Where there is no vision, the people perish: but he that keepeth the law, happy is he. A servant will not be corrected by words: for though he understand he will not answer.

Seest thou a man that is hasty in his words? there is more hope of a fool than of him.

He that delicately bringeth up his servant from a child shall have him become his son at the length.

An angry man stirreth up strife, and a furious man aboundeth in transgression.

A man's pride shall bring him low: but honour shall uphold the humble in spirit.

Whoso is partner with a thief hateth his own soul: he heareth cursing, and bewrayeth it not.

The fear of man bringeth a snare: but whoso putteth his trust in the Lord shall be safe.

Many seek the ruler's favour; but every man's judgment cometh from the Lord.

An unjust man is an abomination to the just: and he that is upright in the way is abomination to the wicked.

Have a great day!
